200th Anniversary of The Kingdom of the Netherlands

Celebrations for the 200th anniversary of The Kingdom of the Netherlands kicked off yesterday when King Willem-Alexander received the biographies of Kings Willem I, Willem II and Willem III in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. Today, the King and Queen attended further celebrations at the Hall of Knights in The Hague. Queen Máxima wore a rather sedate beige wool calot style; the front looked slightly raised, almost in the style of a beret. Unusually for Máxima (and her hat designer, Fabienne Delvigne), this new hat was completely without embellishment. On its own, I don’t think I would have liked this hat but as an accessory to Máxima’s whole outfit (and her incredible aqua silk dress), it looked very regal and elegant.

Princess Beatrix wore a sweeping black picture hat with a double brim and wrapped crown, trimmed with bright magenta silk blooms. I thought the shape of this hat was very beautiful (the transparent top brim and crown wrap are particularly pretty) and the flowers made it very festive. Paired with her pink and black printed dress, this hat is a winner for me.

In the afternoon, the King and Queen watched a re-enactment of King Willem I landing on the beach. Queen Máxima wore the same hat but paired it with a beige wool coat for the outdoor event.

  1. Queen Maximas is my favorite royal hat of the year, the simplicity of it is fantastic. And its so nice to see Princess Bea, I feel like its been forever! She looks lovely as well, I adore the pink and black!

  2. The hat is lovely but the dress does not fit her properly through the chest. Back to the hat, though. This is lovely. I have tried to wear this style hat myself but I can never figure out what to do with my hair. She has nailed it here. The pictures of her wearing the coat show it at an especially good angle. Nice job, Maxima!

  3. The simple hat was a perfect choice for the more exuberant sleeves. As Bristol already mentioned, I really appreciate that Max changes things up so much in the hat department!

  4. Queen Maxima’s hat is simply lovely and Princess Beatrix looks perfectly beautiful in her hat. I really like both of these hats.

  5. I just found your blog & am a new & devoted fan! I love it! Re: Queen Máxima – she looks fabulous here – I’ve always loved the European Royals more than their British counterparts (save for Princess Diana, of course) – they take more risks & they always look genuinely HAPPY & down to earth! (As down to earth as a royal can be, that is). ;)

  6. I thought the hat went beautifully with the dress, and the whole outfit was very elegant. I must say Maxima is very satisfying for a hat-watcher, as she wears so many different styles, compared to many royal ladies who find a style they like and almost invariably stick to it. And I really did like Beatrix’s hat – the proportions of crown to hat please me more than on some of hers, and the mesh effect and lovely bright flowers were great.

  7. I think this look on Max is stellar – glad she did not go with a huge brim hat – the color and size of this one (as you said esp with this dress) were perfect.
