Luxembourg Wedding: Belgian Royal Family

Royal Hats The entire Royal Family of Belgium (including 85 year old dowager Queen Fabiola) attended this royal wedding as the two Royal Houses share a close family connection. The groom’s paternal grandmother, the late Grand Duchess Josephine, was a sister to the late King Bedouin and the current King Albert of Belgium. Yes- the European royals are all cousins in some way!

Queen Paola celebrated this wedding of her great-nephew in a charcoal Kolpik-inspired hat designed by Fabienne Delvigne. While the textured hat coordinated beautifully with her brocade coat, I thought the colour was a little dull. Thank goodness the addition of a brooch on the side livened the ensemble up a bit.

While she did not arrive with the other guests, Queen Fabiola was also on hand for her great nephew’s wedding. Pictured in the far front left of the picture below, she is wearing a grey flapper style headband with jewel and feather detail on the side.

Princess Astrid was dressed head to toe in Dior. The hat shape ventured a little into “flying saucer” territory but I loved it and thought she looked amazing.

There must have been a private memo within the family requesting monochromatic outfits because Princess Mathilde also showed up in oyster pink from head to toe. Her headpiece was designed by Fabienne Delvigne. I don’t think it was very successful as it resembled a clam shell or folded napkin – take your pick – and the colour just wasn’t flattering.

Princess Claire was the only family member to venture out in colour, and it was a pretty understated adventure at that. I adored her wide brimmed burgundy felt hat with upturned slice brim and coat dress although something was off balance about her outfit (the odd shoes? too much purple?). Her hat was also designed by Fabienne Delvigne.

  1. Princess Astrid and Princess Claire are tied for the win in my book. I like Princess Mathilde’s clam shell hat, but the rest of the outfit is too shiny, too much of one color. The hat is just unique enough for me to like , but not too out there. Queen Paola’s hat is not my cup of tea! I am thankful for the bling on the side. I do love Mathilde’s brooch, but I thought Claire’s brooch not right for the outfit. Queen Paolo’s brooch is nice, too. I love Princess Astrid’s shoes. It looks like bows on the back. I wish I could see them from the back.
