Imperial Royals Host Philippine State Visit

The Japanese Imperial couple welcomed Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino on state visit to Japan today. For the official welcoming ceremony held at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Empress Michiko repeated the white and grey saucer hat she premièred just a week ago. In white silk to match the lapel as her suit, Michiko’s saucer hat was trimmed with silk flowers and a small grey under brim that peeked out beneath a flat bow around the front of the hat. Interestingly, when the Empress first wore her grey suit in mid-May, it was with a different piece of millinery (and she débuted this hat it was paired with a different suit!). With a wardrobe of numerous white and grey hats, it is no surprise to see a little mixing and matching from time to time.

  1. The Empress always dresses in sophisticated simplicity. I was not aware that she suffers from head aches which explains to me why she favors the wafer-thin saucer hats.

  2. I agree with HatQueen, the Empress must have more than one hat made to go with each outfit so she can recycle. Because her hats are so small and simple, it would get boring quickly if she recycled the same hats with her wardrobe rotations. The Empress has established a unique style, with her teeny hats, that takes into account the fact that she suffers headaches and can’t wear heavier hats, her petite frame, and I think a homage to the origami and floral artistry traditions of Japan.

  3. I do think her tiny hats look good on her, but would be most unflattering to many other people. Her suit is chic.
