Queen Presents New Colours to Royal Welsh Guard

Queen Elizabeth was at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff today to present new colours to the Royal Welsh Guard. For this ceremony, she repeated her sky blue felt hat trimmed with chrysanthemum blooms fashioned from feathers. While I have previously said all I want to say about this hat, today’s outing again proves how well the Queen and her dressers take each of her engagements individually into account when it comes to choosing her outfit and hat. On an ordinary day, this shade of blue might not stand out in a crowd. On a day with theatrical lighting, an arrival in the back of a convertible SUV and a massive group photo with officers in loden green and red uniforms, this was exactly the right colour.

Designer: Angela Kelly. The hat (including handmade feather flowers) was made by Stella McLaren. Coat designed by Stewart Parvin
Previously Worn: April 5, 2015October 24, 2014April 8, 2014; October 23, 2013

  1. In the last photo, HM is like, “The Pope has nothing on One.” An alright hat, but nothing terribly exciting, although the color is perfect for making certain she’s seen.

  2. I agree with JamesB. Even the repeats haven’t been repeats of brand-new outfits (like last year’s Ascot outfits). The current repeats are all in the regular rotation and repeated ad nauseam.
I don’t remember ever having seen an aerial view of this hat before, though: http://www.apimages.com/metadata/Index/EXPNews-AP-I-ENT-UK-EXPRE-QUEEN-ELIZABETH-II/ce918ab81dd54f03bd1a95dd030a9819/3/0
The misbalanced crown appears to be sloping at the opposite angle of the brim.
I continue to like this outfit, but I also like looking at new outfits.

    • Great shot of the hat. Is it me or is Angela Kelly trying to copy some of Rachel Trevor Morgan’s shapes? Seems to me that the Queen has a similar (albeit much nicer) hat in this style in light purple.

      • I think this is the hat you are referring to, with side-by-side views for comparison

There are similarities in the molded crown shapes but I’m not sure that one looks like a copy of the other. However, Angela Kelly has not typically used this kind of crown shape on her hats.

      • I wouldn’t say that’s a copy but the ideas are similar. But there are lots of similar ideas on a lot of royal hats.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that purple hat. If she’s going to wear another repeat for her birthday parade tomorrow, I hope it’s this one!

  3. Okay! Enough repeats already! I don’t mind this outfit one bit, but it was only worn at Easter. I’ve got a funny feeling she’s on an economy drive and Ascot will be a load of reruns. What are Angela Kelly’s team doing at the mo?!
