Imperial Royals visit Nagoya

On Sunday,  Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan visited the Akasaki Institute at Nagoya University. The Empress wore a new white saucer hat trimmed with a wide twist of the same slate blue silk crepe as her suit. The twist is a bolder trim than we usually see on Michiko’s hats and brought a sense of whimsy to the piece.

Yesterday, Their Imperial Majesties attended the opening of the XIX INQUA Congress, held this year in Nagoya.  For this event, Empress Michiko repeated her black hat with bronze bow. She does not wear many metallic hats and this one, which coordinates well with her suit, is a nice departure from her go-to grey.

I’m always happy to see the Empress take even tiny step of experimentation with her millinery and these two pieces are slightly different than what we usually see her wear. What are you thoughts on these two hats?

  1. Both hats are cute and each one works in with the other clothes worn with them. The metallic one is a nice departure from her same old, same old style. They are such a cute couple.

  2. Both hats are exquisite. I like the size and stronger color of the blue and white saucer, but the bronze metallic bow and matching single lapel is fascinating.

  3. I think all the items she is wearing are very distinctive and flattering to her. The metallic hat is the one I prefer slightly over the other one because it’s a different style to her usual one. I couldn’t pull off these hats, but all power to her because she can!

  4. I’m waving away the hats to say, yay, for the brooch. It’s a beauty. (And, okay, the hats are nice too, I particularly like the blue and white one.)

  5. How I love Their Imperial Majesties! The Empress looks great in both of these hats and outfits, but the blue wins out for me because of the color and the different trim.

  6. The Empress is so elegant that I love just seeing her as she goes about her various engagements. Can’t make up my mind about the hats — both are interesting, for different reasons, and both are becoming. Perhaps the bronze and black one is slightly ahead just because it’s such an interesting artistic choice.

    • It looks like none of the gentlemen are wearing ties. The Empress always dresses so elegant and classical. I love to see her and her family out and about.

    • I wondered about the same thing. The Imperial couple have attended a number of informal events this summer that have seen him without a tie (and the Empress in trousers, without a hat). I can only imagine the event was deemed an informal one as all of the men are without a tie.
