Dutch Royals Join Sail Amsterdam 2015

Members of the Dutch royal family set sail on their vessel, Groene Draeck, captained by King Willem Alexander, during Sail 2015 in Amsterdam on Saturday.

Queen Máxima topped her nautical ensemble with a casual fedora hat in natural straw. Trimmed with a navy ribbon around the base of the crown, the hat was casual chic at its best.

It was lovely to see the King, Queen and their daughters joined by Princess Beatrix, Princess Mabel, Countess Luana and Countess Zaria. It looks like a marvelous time was had by all.

  1. Such a sweet-looking family! Your Princess Beatrix looks so well and relaxed, and so close to Princess Mabel, who is one of my favorite royals. Of course the King and Queen look good, and the children are growing up fast!

  2. I agree with HatQueen that Queen Máxima’s nautical ensemble with a casual straw fedora hat was indeed “casual chic at its best.” It was great to see Princess Beatrix looking well.

  3. This actually isn’t a panama hat. Panama refers to a certain type of straw made from the toquilla palm that originates in Ecuador, where authentic panama hats come from, and not to a specific style of hat (panamas come in styles such as fedora, trilby, optimo, porkpie, etc.). This style is a fedora, and this one looks to be made out of a flexible paper straw, easily packed and more casual than hats made with panama straw.

This hat is definitely appropriate for this outing and is a good casual look for Maxima.

      • It’s a common mistake many people make, thinking panama hat refers to a style. It’s true a majority of panama hats look similar to this hat (especially in shape), but not all of them do. Panama can be dyed to different colors, but natural or bleached is the most common. Since I sell hats at one of my jobs, I need to know all these details. 🙂
