Dutch Royals Begin State Visit To China

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima kicked off a five day visit to China today in Beijing where they  visited a dairy farm and research centre as well as a soccer training facility. For these events, Queen Máxima repeated her rose beige deconstructed calot hat. Made of overlapping waves of pleated, ruched straw, the piece is simply adorned with a swirl the left side studded with tiny glass beads and seed pearls.

This hat frames Máxima’s face nicely and adds a lovely bit of softness against her streamlined, collarless jacket (the two pieces were obviously designed to coordinate perfectly together). Today’s itinerary presented some challenges (what does a Queen wear to tour livestock and walk on a soccer pitch?) and while the choice of trousers for a state visit is unusual, I see why she went this route. The hat adds a small note of formality to the ensemble that makes it work. Just.

  1. The hat and jacket are nice together and, as HQ says, the hat is a nice choice for a series of less formal visits. But I dislike the trousers, both the style and the colour. They’re simply not dressy enough for the rest of her outfit – which is all in one colour but the blue isn’t the right contrast colour. And if Max was so worried about being ‘sensible’ for the day’s visits (small hat, trousers) why on earth is she wearing platform sandals? They’re not even wedges, for goodness sake, but have a spike heel? Good from the waist up; a mess from the waist down.

  2. I don’t mind the beige with the blue – the problem, as someone stated earlier, is it’s a car crash of styles. My eye does not know where to rest. I love Max and when she gets it right it’s SO right but this is just painful.

  3. I don’t like these bandage hats and I wouldn’t wear one if you gave it to me for free. This one is one of the better ones of this type, as at least it has a wave-form shape and some trimmings. Her hair is too messed up. I don’t like shiny fabric for daytime, so these trousers are a fail for me. I would wear the jacket, top, clutch and sandals, but not all at once, and not with teal trousers and earrings.

  4. I want on board until I saw the full length shot! I just think it’s a car crash of different outfits – the trousers and jacket might work without the hat, and the hat and jacket work without the trousers. But combined, Im finding it all a little strange…

  5. Not this time…The queen’s combination of clothes and accessories are all wrong. The hat requires a very sleek hairdo; too much hair here, and much too formal. A fedora or even her signature large-brimmed hat would have been a better look. The smooth kid jacket needed matching wider-cut pants with a flat-heeled bootie or flats.

  6. I’m not wild about this look, but it’s not terrible and is fairly practical for the events of the day. I’ll never warm to this “bandage” style, but it seems to work better here since she’s thrown in the aquamarine earrings and teal trousers as color contrasts. What I really don’t like about her outfit are the sandals, which seem much too casual for the rest of the outfit (even though they are heels); I think pointed flats would’ve been a much better choice.

  7. This outfit is too much of a hodge-podge of different looks. The shiny, skinny trousers look like an evening look, and the bright blue doesn’t compliment the jacket. I like the shape of the rose beige deconstructed calot hat, but not the colour. From some angles it looks like a bandage! The trim of tiny glass beads and seed pearls takes it into cocktail hour territory for me. I think the hat, jacket, blouse, bag and shoes all almost matching is overkill. I am not a fan of the wearing of trousers with a hat in general, and I think it works best with an androgynous look, such as a trilby or fedora with well-tailored pants and a blazer or jacket.

  8. Oh dear, I think I hear the gnashing of teeth re the wearing of trousers…..with a hat. Personally, I love the trousers, especially the colour. Hat okay, given the type of engagement and quite flattering to her best feature- that wonderful expressive face. Thanks.
