Imperial Royals Continue Philippine Visit

The Imperial Emperor and Empress continued their visit to the Philippines today, taking in Japanese language classes and visiting a WWII war memorial. Empress Michiko sported two hats over the course of the day, the first a repeated denim blue saucer with gold origami bow. The high contrast punch of this piece puts in among my favourite of Michiko’s hats.

Second, Empress Michiko wore a new white disc hat. The petite piece is trimmed with a large bow in the same blue-grey fabric as her suit and topped with a sprig of white silk flowers. While this hat is more subdued (and less to my liking), these photos give us a great view of how Michiko anchors her small hats to her head. You’ll notice a hidden system of elastic that extends around her chignon which is anchored with a hairpin near the hat over her left temple. The bottom photo also reveals a white hat pin  tucked just under the hat.

I think that makes for two solid hat appearances from the Empress today. What do you think of this pair of hats?

  1. It is the first hat and outfit worn by the Empress for the win! The colours are good on her and the second hat looks a bit to much like an actual saucer!

  2. The Empress is very beautiful…in every hat and outfit. I love to see the color combinations of each hat and suit. And her beautiful and lustrous pearl jewelry is exquisite!

  3. TIMs are such a wonderful couple. No surprises from the Empress, but she still looked so regal, yet very approachable at the same time. I loved the video of TIMs, for it’s not often we get to see them in motion.

  4. I have never followed the Empress before, so I am enamored with her outfits and matching hats. They are so appropriate for her petite figure. She is so very elegant and more modern than I expected.

  5. Not a fan of the hats but love how you pointed out how she keeps them on. I would have never noticed that.

Last fall I thought this blog was getting a bit stale (no offence meant) but in 2016 it has been SO FRESH. You kicked it up a notch and it’s back to original awesome.

  6. I just find both the Emperor and Empress to be such a delightful couple. She looks great in her outfits. And, it is interesting to see the anchoring details on the hat.

  7. Both hats are lovely, but the more marked color contrasts of the first outfit are more to my liking.
The anchoring system is better left unseen, of course, as it is in most cases, but obviously the little sauces aren’t glued directly to the Empress’s head, and I am glad to see the anchors in such detail.

  8. These hats are so elegant in their way that it seems churlish not to like them better, but having been “teased” by the recent larger white saucer hat, I can’t help feeling disappointed in them. The forward placement of the saucer did not seem to affect its appearance as adversely as the extreme forward position of the discs does. However, as usual, the empress looked serene and lovely.
