Swedish Royals Welcome Chilean President

The King and Queen of Sweden welcomed Chilean President Michelle Bachelet to the Royal Palace in Stockholm today for the start of a three day state visit. While I originally thought her bright coral pinks hat and suit were new, they have indeed been worn before (thanks Lex!)

The rounded calot hat is covered in the same textured fabric as her suit and trimmed simply with a multi-looped bow on the side. While the calot shape is very familiar to her, this shade is a more difficult one that not many can carry and I think Silvia wears it very well.

Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Sophia both suspended their maternity leaves to join in the official welcome. Princess Victoria topped a pink frock with her pale pinky-mauve headpiece of interlooped rings with huge silk bloom on the side (some of you will remember this piece from Princess Leonore’s christening where it made a sweet connection to the past). I adore this dramatic piece on Victoria and it’s pairing today with a simpler dress made showed it off, beautifully.

Princess Sofia topped her simple cream dress with a cocktail hat in natural straw. With a flat base, the piece’s focus is entirely on its trim of multiple straw bow loops and a tall feather spine. During this first year of her royal life, we have seen Sofia in small fascinators and today’s cocktail hat is her first experiment with more substantial millinery. It’s a neutral piece but the shape and scale work well for Sofia and she wears it so wonderfully that I caught myself wishing she had worn it for the King’s birthday last weekend. The pop of colour brought to her ensemble by her shoes is a fun touch.

In recent months, we’ve seen the Swedish Princesses favour fascinators and I was happy to see more substantial pieces of millinery top their elegant ensembles today. What do you think of this trio of Swedish royal hats?

  1. This coral color is beautiful on Silvia, and this whole ensemble is superb. I just hope last week’s brimmed hat isn’t the only one she wears this year.

Victoria looks quite nice, but I still find this headpiece a bit odd.

Sofia looks great in this cocktail hat, and I do hope she works with this shape more often (and hopefully a brimmed hat one day!). The only thing I was disappointed in was the lack of color, but her awesome shoes help make up for that (and Sofia and Carl Philip make a very beautiful couple, just saying).

    • I agree with what Jake says: May 10, 2016 at 8:33 pm. I also don’t quite understand Crown Princess Victoria’s headpiece.

  2. The Swedish ladies have been having quite a run lately, haven’t they? Well done once again! And, this gives MrFitzoy great hope for what may be ahead for Princess Sophia, once she fully crosses the rubicon….(haticon?) Brava.

  3. Added to the hats we saw for the King’s Birthday event (except for Sofia there), this gives me hope that the Swedish ladies are moving away from fascinators, which would be great! Victoria’s isn’t exactly a hat, but it’s quite a substantial piece, and I think works very well.

  4. Everyone looks fantastic! My personal preference is that hair be restrained in some way with a cocktail hat, but this is a minor quibble.

  5. I love all three hats, but especially Princess Sofia’s. I think it’s dramatic enough to be interesting, but not too much for an event like this. I agree with hats on though- I think the look would have been much improved with an updo.

  6. I like them, the only problem I have is with Sofia’s almost arrow to the sky tip/peak/antenna, which makes it unbalanced especially compared to the other hats. maybe different hairstyle would improve it as well, it is a bit high low. don’t get me wrong I like the hat and Sofia.

    • I’m sorry but Sofia looks great and her hair is actually STYLISH. So many royals have hairstyles stuck in the past and anytime a young one actually has current hair everyone here goes ballistic. I’m sorry people- long hair with beachy waves is totally IN. Get used to it.

And GO SOFIA! She’s looking awesome especially so soon after having a baby.

  7. Queen Silvia looks great. I am not a fan of Princess Sophia’s head gear! It looks like she might be able to pull in radio reception from Russia with that one!

  8. Queen Silvia looks wonderful in coral! A calot is a safe choice for her, but it works very well. Crown Princess Victoria looks fantastic. I’m not crazy about that headpiece, but it goes very well with the outfit. Wish we could see the brooch better! Princess Sofia looks terrific. I like the percher, and I appreciate that she is not wearing it over her face. She is really stepping into her role so well.
