Queen Máxima Launches Neighbour’s Day

Queen Máxima was in Urk today to launch the 11th annual Dutch Neighbour’s Day as well as look in at the damage from a recent gas explosion in the town. For this day of engagements,  Máxima repeated her airy turban made of ruched and folded light oyster grey straw. This hat has a slight metallic sheen that makes it sparkle in daylight which in turn, further lightens the design and makes it look all the more like a rain cloud on her head. A pretty rain cloud, certainly, but a rain cloud nonetheless.

Today we saw Queen Elizabeth in a marshmallow and now we’ve seen Queen Máxima in a rain cloud. I can’t resist asking, dearest readers- when it comes to royal millinery, are you with team marshmallow or team rain cloud?

  1. There is way too much going on here. But she can be wrong once in a while, she is so brave and so enthusiastic about all the possible outfits the fashion world has to offer. 🙂

  2. It is a strange outfit, obviously, but it’s surprisingly well coordinated both in color AND in the style (read: every piece is odd). Wearing either the rain cloud or the skirt or (possibly) just the top with “normal” pieces for the rest of the outfit would make the outfit look out of place. When the entire outfit is out of place, I think the overall impression comes out better.

  3. I love how clever, light, and unique this hat is!! I think it looks horrible, however, because of the unfortunate color, and because it sits so low on her head it looks as if it’s been squashed on. It’s main problem seems to be that the proportions are too generous. If scaled down and in an attractive color, I think it would be delightful.

  4. I will always applaud a willingness to go for interesting and “different”, but unfortunately this is not a good result…

  5. Maxima has finally worn a hat that even I, a fervent fan of hers, cannot justify why she even picked this whole ensemble. One still has to give her credit for her moxie in trying just about everything unusual and unique.

  6. I agree with all the criticisms above. I would like to comment on the stringy hair. Maybe an updo would make the hat a little more presentable.

  7. The Hat: Perhaps if the gas explosion (for which I am truly sorry and not mocking) had taken place in India. That’s the influence I see. The Ensemble: The only thing that might work here is starting over with something completely different. She is so gorgeous and usually looks so wonderful but not this time.

  8. What else can we expect, since we’re reading a blog that states “Following the Bold, (Beautiful), and Bizarre world of Royal Millinery.”
The ONLY redeeming value is her wonderful smile. Even her hair looks like it barely survived the gas explosion!

  9. This hat has potential, but in a different color, like a softer blue or red. As is, it’s rather drab, as is the whole ensemble. I don’t mind the top or the skirt, but that scarf randomly thrown over her shoulder at times is just too much. Kinda messy, but she’s done worse.

  10. This is just a disaster from top to bottom. The hat is horrible. It looks like someone sat on it, and the separates she is wearing are not helping. The skirt is particularly out of place. It might be fine for a cocktail party, but not with that top. The hat needs to be retired. I don’t think it ever was, or ever will be in style. Ever.

  11. if this was in fashion in this period of time I would forgive her, but it isn’t in fashion, badly constructed, not flattering, silly looking and I can go on and on but I will stop here.
while wearing this hat and looking this happy = I want her pills.

  12. A very very strange outfit, from top to toe! I think even the lovely joyous Maxima cannot carry this mishmash off. That hat needs to blow away for ever!
