Swedish Monarchs Welcome Papal Visit

King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia of Sweden welcomed Pope Francis today for a two-day visit to Sweden marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The royal couple greeted the Pope at the Royal palace in Lund this morning where the queen repeated her vibrant purpley-blue brimless hat trimmed with black feathers.

While the shape of this design looks like a rounded pillbox from the front, the side view reveals it to be more of a calot with indented crown similar to a Pork Pie hat. The shape nestles nicely into Queen Silvia’s hairstyle and the vibrant colour (which is reported to be a royal blue despite taking on a very purple hue in many photographs) suits her very well.

    • It was an ecumenical event marking both the concord and conflict between the two churches. Both the Vatican and LWF (Lutheran World Federation) have used the word ‘commemoration’ not ‘celebration’.

  1. Yes, it’s a nice allrounder.
I like it best as worn on Jan 17, 2016, i.e. with a hairdo less bouffant, and with the hat more forward on her head — which means that we can see the feathers clearly from the front. And the hat colour pops, as an eye-catching accent against the dark brown of her coat.
In today’s outfit, the white blouse acts as a fussy focal point, detracting from the regal lines of the cloak and hat, and reducing the impact of the blue en bloc. A dark uncollared blouse/top – and bigger earrings – would look terrific.

    • I agree with your thoughts about the hairstyle but my impression is that the cloak has too much volume and if it were more streamlined in its construction then her outfit would look better.

  2. This is a great look for Slivia. The color is fantastic and I agree the shape works perfectly with her hairstyle. I also like the shawl type coat, a nice change from the everyday coat look!

  3. Lovely hat for Queen Silvia. The vibrant color is wonderful, especially heading into winter.
I’ll bet that she and the Pontiff had a lovely chat in Spanish!
