Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to this day, fifty-six years ago, which saw a young Queen Elizabeth wear this voluminous, silvery blue, tulle turban while on state visit to India.

  1. I also think this hat is perfect, a classic of its kind, feminine yet majestic. The entire outfit I too would love to see again.

  2. I can see why the Commonwealth fell in love with its young Queen. She has a quiet dignity and a beautiful smile. There was a period in her reign when she was hardly ever photographed smiling – yet the sun comes out from behind the clouds when she does! This outfit is a beautiful colour and if the fabric is silk it was the perfect choice for India, being both luxe and breathable (if only silk-look then it still wins on the richness of its look). The hat? Meh. But it’s not the worst turban I’ve ever seen, or seen ER in. The outfit comes together pretty well.

  3. When I was young, I had the Pitkin’s Pride of England (or was it Britain?) book of the Royal Tour of India. I used to pour over it, admiring the clothes, hats, and decorated elephants. This has brought back fond memories. Thank you. The colour is enchanting.

  4. The total look is just lovely, I’m sure someone could make something like this today, I might even have a go myself. Love the soft pastel colour, HM looks very happy, love her smile.

  5. I love these hats. Not everyone if fond of them I know. This one in particular to me is very beautiful, especially the color. Do you think it is possible HM would wear something like this again? Are there milliners today that could and would interpret it for these times? Thank you for revisiting this hat.
