Day 2 of Belgian State Visit To Denmark

The Belgian state visit to Denmark continued on its second day today with a busy programme of events. Queen Mathilde and Crown Princess Mary took in a meeting at the Mary Foundation as well as a visits to Amager Common School, UN City in Copenhagen, and an education focused luncheon before meeting up with their husbands at a Belgian cultural and tourism exhibition and film.

Queen Mathilde wore her second new ensemble of this trip complete with a new hat. In pale dusky pink straw, the design follows a simple rounded crown and mushroom brim, trimmed with a folded straw hatband in the same shade. Clearly designed to coordinate with her Esmeralda Ammoun designed suit (who seems to have taken inspiration from Empress Michiko for the sleeves on the jacket!), the outfit is a streamlined one. While the shape and scale of the hat is lovely, its slightly bland colour leaves me wishing for some further embellishment to liven it up. Feathers, yes?

Crown Princess Mary repeated her much worn moulded grey felt casque hat with large monochrome felt leaves on the right side. She wears the pieces well and while it’s not my favourite grey hat in Mary’s millinery closet its styling today with her neat ponytail, stud earrings and that beautiful scarf, is spot on.

Thoughts about these two hats today in Copenhagen?

  1. So this is what a tweedy material outfit looks like without a hat covered in the same fabric (yes, Angela Kelly, I’m looking at you!). Queen Mathilde always looks so elegant and this is no exception. She has a serene beauty that’s hard to go past (and her earrings are gorgeous too). Princess Mary is possessed of that same kind of beauty so seeing them together is great fun. I’m not in love with Mary’s clothing today, though. It’s an odd mix of heavy top (which I like) and light-looking skirt. The scarf is very nice and worn well and the hat is fine. Nothing special in this instance, although I have admired it on other occasions when worn with other outfits.

  2. A Lady Amherst pheasant feather swooping around the crown? Yes, I could see that!

A question, Hat Queen: the mushroom shaped brim — is it traditionally worn so very squarely on the head? Is that a trend? It looks so much heavier than a picture hat with a cartwheel brim, which are often worn at a pretty rakish angle. Just curious.

And, was that THE Fabienne Delvigne commenting on your blog??? WOW!

    • We’ve seen both mushroom and cartwheel brims worn square and at an angle- depends on the hat and the wearer. There aren’t hard and fast rules about such things!

  3. The Queen looks very pretty in her new outfit and hat. I love the size and style of the hat. Perhaps some kind of straw fringe mimicking the fringe of her sleeve would add a little interest; but otherwise, she is, as always, so perfect! The princess’s dress is very pretty, but the scarf takes away all that is going on with the dress, and the hat is old and unflattering. I think the outfit is “heavy” for this time of year, and too casual for the day.

  4. I think QM looks lovely in that color, nd in the first picture she looks so nice, in the other pictures she seems to have her hat pushed up too high. I have to say that I just hate those cape jackets, I agree completely with Joanne on that. I can’t say much about PM’s outfit, if she was trying not to overshadow QM kudos to her. I have to say that PM does seem like the kind of person who would think of those things.

  5. I thought Queen Mathilde’s suit and hat were beautiful but a bit dowdy. The skirt was a bit too long, the shoulders a bit too bulky, and the hat a bit too boring. She looks elegant and she’s never the most daring of her counterparts, but I think she could have looked better.

Princess Mary didn’t look spectacular, either, but I think she rightly let the Queen take the lead.

  6. It was nice of CP Mary not to overshadow the visiting Queen, who looks great. Queen Mathilde’s new hat goes well with her suit, which is power dressing, very queenly. I think Mary’s scarf is what ties her hat to the outfit, combining the gray and burgundy. Her outfit looks a bit fall/winter to me, and I think the many pleats in the skirt make the outfit too busy. It has a lot going on already. But those are tiny quibbles; she does look beautiful as ever.

  7. I like everything about Queen Mathilde’s outfit. The various lighting differences make it a little difficult to tell what color the suit and the hat actually are, but at least the fabric and the hat change color in unison from picture to picture.
I think Crown Princess Mary’s outfit, both hat and suit, are less successful, although the scarf is intriguing.

  8. Mary’s scarf totally makes her outfit. The hat is OK but with that scarf it really works. Is it me or is her skirt a teeny tiny shade different than her top?

I love Mathilde. I really do. But she’s dressing so old these days. Love the shape of the hat but the color is so boring.

  9. Beautiful look for Queen Mathilde. This is very similar to one of Maxima’s, isn’t it, but with a shallower brim?

  10. Both of these ladies look stunning!! Love the hats and outfits. Just fabulous. The tweed of Mathilde’s suit and CPMary’s scarf are particular standouts. For some reason when I clicked through and saw the first picture it immediately reminded me of Princess Diana.

  11. A beautiful hat and tweed outfit for Mathilde! But of course you know I wholeheartedly agree that feathers must be added!

Mary looks fine, but it’s not exciting for me, and I find her scarf distracting and think her ensemble looks better without it.

  12. I think Queen Mathilde looks stunning!! LOVE that hat – and her whole outfit. Perfect. Princess Mary looks fine but for me the Queen in the winner…

  13. They both look lovely in different ways. Mathilde’s suit is very pretty in its soft tweed and the cape is an unusual effect that works well. I love the simplicity of her hat and its soft pink colour. Mary, on the other hand, reminds me of my mother back in the 1950’s. She was a beautiful woman who wore elegant clothes and hats, and seeing Mary like this brought a lump to my throat!
