This Week’s Extras

Royal Hats

The Duke of Edinburgh wore a natty newsboy cap to drive carriage during the first day of the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The Queen was spotted on subsequent days in the trademark silk headscarves (one printed with horses) she always wears to this event. She also surprised today in a new hat that we’ll review on Monday.

Queen Elizabeth also drove herself to church last Sunday at Windsor in what I believe is another new hat. It seems unusual to debut a new outfit for a private event- maybe she keeps some outfits and hats just for private use?

In addition to sharing this peek inside her haberdashery stash, Jane Taylor invites any burgeoning milliners to take part in her summer school courses in August. If I could, I certainly would!

Reader Joyce shared these two interesting articles looking at hats worn to the annual Central Park Luncheon and famous hats from Broadway productions (New York Times)

Beautiful use of blue crin on this design from John Boyd.

Royal Hats

Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and Princess Estelle enjoyed a KISS concert last weekend

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry hosted a garden party today at Buckingham Palace for the children of those who have died serving in the armed forces. There looks to have been much fun and merriment.

  1. I second Mitten Mary on “nifty post”. And many thanks to reader Joyce for her fascinating NYTimes links – though it hurt to realise that the luncheon in Central Park, and all such events hereafter, can’t be covered anymore by the extraordinary, legendary photoreporter/former milliner Bill Cunningham. I used to watch his reports religiously. He was the only reason I ever clicked on the NYTimes. Gosh I miss him.

  2. Nifty post! As always, I’m trying to select a royal for a hat, and I deciding that the fabulous John Boyd should go to Zara. The color would be wonderful for her, and it would be great to see her in something with a brim.
