to 1928 and what might be Queen Elizabeth’s first official engagement in a hat. It’s a sweet bonnet that our favourite royal hat wearer (who celebrates her 91st birthday today) wears, beautifully. Thanks to the British Monarchy for sharing this photo today.
Simply put, Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday celebrations last month were a royal hat extravaganza. With most members of the British royal family attending both the Service of Thanksgiving and Trooping the Colour, this birthday party was a two day long festival of royal millinery. Twelve designs stood out to you, based on your comments, as stellar pieces. From this dozen, we are going to name our top two favourites to put through to our year-end contest for favourite new royal hat of 2016.

Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday celebrations brought us over 50 royal hats worn the first weekend in early June. While many of these designs were new ones, there were six repeated designs that stood out to you, based on your comments, as millinery successes. It’s now time to choose one winner to move forward in our ongoing countdown to favourite repeated royal hat of the year.

Crown Princess Masako celebrated her 52nd birthday last Wednesday. As per tradition, she visited the Emperor and Empress at the Imperial Palace on this day, arriving in a new, pale blue silk brimless hat. While the shape is very simple (one cannot tell if it is a pillbox or a bumper), the colour is lovely.
As we send Princess Masako belated greetings, I thought it might be fun to pick up with our own birthday tradition here at Royal Hats and suggest what hats we would like to see her repeat in the year ahead. My pick for Masako is this a wonderful 1940s inspired, raspberry velvet and beaded beret cocktail hat that she wore back in December 1999. The shape is so interesting and the colour is just fantastic on her.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway celebrates her 42nd birthday today! As we send her our best wishes for her health and happiness, it’s also an opportunity to suggest a hat for her to repeat in the coming year. My choice is a pale pink Fabienne Delvigne design in gossamer straw with an unfinished brim that broadly curls up on one side. The rough edge on the brim gives lightness to the piece that I think works so well for the Crown Princess. What hat would you like to see Princess Mette-Marit bring out again this year?

Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, celebrates her 65th birthday today. Suggesting a hat for her to repeat this year is a tricky task, as the pieces in her millinery wardrobe are each worn many, many times (usually through several decades). There is, however, one piece we haven’t seen in a while that I would love to see trotted out again. Princess Anne wears petite hats so well and this one, in cream straw, has the loveliest upturned ruffle at the back. Despite its age (20+ years), I think it reads as a classic piece that looks great on the princess.
Princess Beatrice of York celebrated her 27th birthday over the weekend. I didn’t want this occasion to pass entirely without sending her belated greetings and sharing our suggestions for the hats we would like to see her repeat in the coming year. My pick is the wonderful teal straw hat by Sarah Cant she wore at Ascot last year. I adore the shape and the colour is just wonderful on her.
