More Royals at the Races

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and his junior wife, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, Princess of Jordan, Sheikha of Dubai, also attended the Epsom Derby today.  These two are certainly horsey types – Princess Haya is President of the International Equestrian Federation and Sheikh Mohammed owns numerous stable operations and is a major (and sometimes controversial) player in international thoroughbred horse racing and breeding. For the races today, Sheikh Mohammed wore the customary black silk top hat and Princess Haya wore a dramatic picture hat with wide black and white stripes by Philip Treacy.

It’s a fantastic hat, although it might have overwhelmed her petite frame a little.

These two usually stay in England for Ascot so I expect we’ll see a few more hats (and more couture fashion!)  from them later this month.

  1. I can see the workmanship in this hat. The dark, woven fabric is sewn in at a 45-deg angle which is not easy to do. The choice of the dark, translucent fabric for the rings makes this hat, otherwise it would be a wide-brimed ‘floppy straw.’

  2. That first picture gives me the giggles. If not for the man behind the princess, the hat would have melded perfectly into the zebra…

  3. Princess Haya looks stunning, what a beautiful woman. The hat, shoes and bag look fabulous with her wonderful red suit.

    • That’s what I love – the whole look is amazing and elevates the hat from fantastic (on it’s own) to jaw-droppingly gorgeous. THIS is how to do hat glamour!

      • You said it. The hat is great but the hat with the whole outfit is utterly amazing. I’m almost speechless.

    • I do too. It looks so amazing on her, especially paired with the open-necked red suit and perfectly matched red lipstick. The workmanship on this hat is really remarkable.

  4. Black and white is always very smart. I would like smaller stripes on the hat but it looks very elegant on this princess.

    • I’m in the minority with you it seems. I think the hat is wearing her instead of her wearing the hat. It’s still a nice hat but I’d like it better on Princess Maxima or Princess Mary.

      • I think it looks great on her. She wears a lot of couture clothes and hats so I’m probably used to seeing her in a lot of bold looks. She looks great in red and the black and white looks amazing with the red suit and lipstick. I don’t think this hat would look so good without her red lipstick!

    • I agree. Black and white hats are usually the nicest ones but the stripes on this one are too loud. She’s getting swallowed up in this hat. Too bad because she’s very pretty.
