Autumn Phillips At Ascot Racecourse

Princess Anne’s daughter-in-law, Autumn Phillips, attended the King George Day Meet at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday. She wore a lovely percher disk hat in pale blue straw which was trimmed with curling feathers and a large silk bloom. There is a lot going on with this little hat but I think it works beautifully in this muted colour and paired with Autumn’s structured sheath dress. It’s a fun piece of millinery she wears quite well, don’t you think?

Queen and Duke of Edinburgh Enjoy Day 1 of Commonwealth Games

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh attended the first day of competition today at the 20th Commonwealth Games. The royal couple watched the England vs Wales women’s hockey match at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre and toured the Athlete’s village. Queen Elizabeth repeated one of her Diagonal Wrapped Crown hats, a cloche style hat with domed crown that is wrapped in a tall diagonal band which towers above the crown on one side. This hat, in vibrant sky blue straw, features a spray of green and white feathers and edging around the brim in the same fabric as the Queen’s spring green coat.

Looking at this hat today has made me change my mind about this particular hat shape. It’s interesting, it’s a wonderful mix of curves and straight edges, and it’s a good scale for Her Majesty. I like the balance of the overall outfit, where the primarily blue hat gives a lovely contrast to the primarily green coat. My only issue is with the odd white flat bow on the side of the hat which just does not seem to fit.

Hats aside, the following photos of the Queen and Prince Philip watching the hockey match were too wonderful not to post. They looked to be sincerely enjoying themselves.

Hat Types: The Stovepipe

Stovepipe | Royal Hats

History: During their peak of popularity in the 1849s and 1850s, Top Hats also grew in height. This new variation, with a straight-sided crown approximately eight inches in height, was named the Stovepipe. At the start of his second term as US president in 1864, Abraham Lincoln had adopted this style of hat and it remains synonymous with him even today. Like the closely-related Top Hat, Stovepipe Hats fell out of mainstream fashion during the World Wars.

During the late 1950s and 1960s, one of the hat shapes that became fashionable in women’s millinery was a hat with a tall, squared crown and short, downward facing brim. This silhouette, a cross between a stovepipe and a cloche hat, became what we now consider to be a Stovepipe hat. This hat underwent a slight surge of popularity just after the turn of the last century.

Characteristics: a tall hat with a small brim. The crown might be square, diagonal or rounded but is visibly tall. Most Stovepipe hats have a slightly downward facing brim but occasionally, the brim is flat.

Royals Associated with this Hat Style: We have seen a tall crowned hat on many younger royals, especially during the early 2000s. These days, however, this hat shape is a common one for Queen Elizabeth.

I find it very interesting that this variation of the Top Hat has morphed into a relatively common silhouette for female millinery while the traditional Top Hat remains a men’s hat. The Stovepipe’s characteristic shape lends itself to a dramatic look that can easily stand out in a crowd (one of the purposes of a royal hat). Sometimes, however, the tall crown and narrow brim can look off balance and overpowering. Are you a fan of the royal Stovepipe?

Queen Elizabeth Opens Commonwealth Games

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, attended the Opening Ceremony for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games today. The Queen, who is Patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation and officially opened the games, debuted a new hat for this occasion.

This Angela Kelly design features another Oblique Brim, a sharply edged crown and a spray of flowers, silk leaves and feathers on the side. The crown and underside brim of hat is covered entirely in appliqued lace. The lace makes this hat for me as it provides such a lovely textural detail and beautifully frames the Queen’s face. My problem is with the embellishment on the side of the hat- I think it’s too much, too small and too fussy.

The Imperial couple continued their long-time support of leprosy by visiting a national leper house in Tome City.  Empress Michiko repeated one of her mini-pillbox hats in white, trimmed with a white and slate blue folded fabric bow. The bow coordinated with the lapel on her suit jacket to create another harmonious ensemble.
