Day 2 of Cheltenham Festival

Ladies’ Day at the Cheltenham Festival was attended by two of our favourite hat-wearing members of the British Royal Family. The Duchess of Cornwall wore a new hat and matching coat in taupe Glen Urquhart plaid. The hat, with a ruched plaid crown, is trimmed with a wide faux fur cuff brim. Camilla has numerous other hats in this style (something we’ll look at more tomorrow), and often, the ruched crown of this design looks sloppy. The crown of this hat appears to be more structured, which benefits the overall appearance of the hat. It’s not my favourite hat design but this version looks great on Camilla and compliments her coat very well.

Camilla was joined by her children, Tom and Laura, and their spouses. Tom and Laura both sported hats and looked to be having a marvellous time with their mum.

Designer: Lock and Co. It looks like a bespoke version of the “Frost” design
Previously Worn: I believe this is a new hat

    • While the style is exactly the same, the dress and coat she wore yesterday are made of a different fabric! Camilla has multiple hats in this style- we’ll take a closer look at all of them next week.

  1. Cheltenham has a traditional dress code and takes place pre-Easter, hence the winter hats. The hatless lady talking to the Duchess of Cornwall is the novelist Jilly Cooper. I think she looks a little unkempt in comparison.

  2. Camilla has a few of these hats and usually, the plaid fabric in the hat doesn’t match her coat which drives me nuts! At least the hat and the coat match here.

  3. I’m typically not a huge fan of these Paddington hats Camilla favors, but this one looks better than previous incarnations. I love that the whole family got into the hat game today and will be looking for more photos of Laura’s hat! Glad to see them all looking so happy.

  4. Well we don’t love he Paddington hats let’s face it. However we need to remember…this is a private visit to the races and that Cheltenham is the most tweedy of the British racing festivals. It’s also still fairly chilly here. So the hat is totally appropriate for where she’s wearing it. In his context the hat is fine, and she does look very smart in her ensemble. My problem is when she wears these somewhat informal hats to formal engagements, but this isn’t one of those days!

  5. This hat by itself is a miss for me, but paired with the coat, it looks fine. Add me to the list of why is she wearing a fur hat in spring?! I agree with Anne: when all you see is the head shot, it looks heavy and huge. However, when you see the full body shot, it is proportionate and it looks fine. This style of coat and hat seems to be a favorite of hers. She likes to be comfortable and appropriate, and I think she got it.

  6. I think the Duchess of Cornwall’s coat is very well tailored, but I am not a fan of this style of hat. I don’t really understand why someone would wear a fur-trimmed hat to the races and in their Spring too.

  7. I think the Duchess of Cornwall’s outfit looks surprisingly good. This hat is much better than the brownish tan one she has worn with a slightly mismatched coat in the past. Today’s outfit is completely appropriate for the occasion.

  8. On the head shot photos, the hat seems to be too massive and heavy, but where we can see her entire figure, proportions are fine. I love the combination of colours, very elegant!
