Members of the Romanian Royal Family took part in events to celebrate their country’s National Holiday today, including an annual Garden Party hosted at Elisabeta Palace.
Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown, topped her pale pink dress and jacket with a matching boater hat. The straw of the hat appears to be woven in a lace-like design, giving interesting texture to the piece and the hat is trimmed with a feather spray on the side. The different textures between the hat, dress and jacket are a great example of balanced monochrome dressing although I wish Margareta hadn’t worn the hat so far back on her head.

Margareta was joined by her sisters, Princess Elena and Princess Maria. Elena wore a cream straw saucer hat trimmed with cream, black and fuchsia feathers and long quills that linked with the bright print of her dress. Princess Marie wore a teal design with upturned brim overlaid with lace applique in the same colour.

I love Princess Margareta’s whole ensemble from the delicate pink color to the flirty ruffled skirt to her pearl and diamond jewelry to her matching accessories AND that includes her hat! Yes, maybe it could have been worn farther forward and tilted ever so slightly to the right but that’s a minor quibble in my book. I also had to let everyone that I went down the rabbit hole regarding the Romanian royal family and they have so many women it would be nice to have more hat-wearing occasions!

This is the fun thing about this blog, I never noticed how important the placement of the hat was and what effect it generates, how it can change from formal to normal to okay a hat. I learn something new every day

Margareta’s hat is just OK in my book – the flower/feather adornment looks too large and tall for my taste. It ends up looking sort of like a package adornments.
I don’t always like boaters, but this one is proportioned just right. Agreed with HQ that it could be worn further forward.
If my husband had been there, he would have pushed the hat farther forward! He has a real “thing” about hats worn too far back on the head. I shudder to think what he would do to Mette Marit and her gravity defying hats! The pale pink is very pretty and delicate though. And I wonder if there isn’t something in Hat Queen’s comment about fear of disturbing hairstyles.
Glitter Girl, I’m with your husband totally on his opinion. Here is perhaps one of the rarest examples of HM with the same issue. I want to bump it forward a couple inches, but I’d be afraid of being escorted to the tower!

I was also going to say I think Margareta normally wears most of her hats back on her head and off her face. In fact, this seems to be a recurring thing for the Romanian royals based on their past appearances. I have a feeling this has to do with them not wearing hats very often, and this would not mess up their hair as much, especially as Margareta has styled bangs.
As for Margareta’s hat, this is a lovely piece, and for once I actually don’t mind this sitting farther back as the trim, while subtle, is still quite visible. Her outfit is also subdued, but sophisticated.
I’m disappointed there aren’t closer up photos of Elena and Maria yet; Elena’s disc headpiece looks to be quite fabulous; my only complaint is that I wish it was more over her forehead. Then again, I think hairstyle wins here, but also there looks to be some loops sticking out from under the front brim that would be ridiculous if the hat sat more forward.
Did Maria cut her hair?? I definitely have always liked her hair down with her hats. While the color is beautiful for her, it seems a bit dated to me, especially with her hair gone. Maybe a closer look will make me like this one more.
Overall though, this is probably the most solid appearance for the Romanian National Day since this event has been covered on the blog.
HQ, I agree with the hat position being too far back. This placement always makes me think that the wearer is actually not comfortable with it on her head. Just about ALL of Margareta’s hats are place thus, as is the hat you posted last year for the same occasion.
BTW, this is a clear case IMHO that the princess is coordinated, and not matchy.

She was coordinated today, although I didn’t like it, and she was matchy here in 2017 – needed to clarify.
We’ll talk more about coordinated vs. matchy next week! You’re right- Margareta does wear a lot of hats in this position. I’m not a fan.
I’ve been trying to think since you posted this what Margareta’s hat, positioned as it was, reminded me of, and today it came to me: the young Anne of Green Gables (though Anne’s hat was a good deal less elegant).
